Many movies had a clear message even without any sound. However, sometimes in the actual movie theatre was a pianist that would play along with the films. Sometimes the music didn't match what was happening in the movie. Also, audience members might have to listen to a pianist that would accidentally make a mistake during a show. Nevertheless, these movies were new and exciting at the time.
